David Bowie January 9, 1947- January 10, 2016
“Taking away the theatrics and the costuming and the outer layer, I’m a writer. I started examining the subject matter I write about, and it really only boils down to a few songs based around loneliness to an extent, coupled with isolation, some kind of spiritual search, and a looking for a way into communicating with other people. And that’s about it. That’s all I’ve written about for 40 years. It hasn’t really changed. I’ve dressed it in different ways throughout my life. Trying to find a different approach each time, trying to find another way into the questions by kind of disarming them, creeping up on them as somebody else or whatever.”
~David Bowie
David Bowie was a revolutionary, collaborative rock star who approached the existential questions of humankind in his music and performances! Born with an out of bounds Mercury in Capricorn in the 11th house of Hopes and Dreams, he was serious minded as all Capricorns are. His communications with us were “past normal” ~ a trait we find with out of bounds planets. The middle of winter is the perfect time to reflect on the path of life as the distractions of life are turned down and quieted when we hunker under a blanket before a roaring fire place with tea, thinking. Fitting that his out of bounds Mercury made him think of himself as a writer.
His Capricorn Sun and Mars residing in the 12th house suggest a reclusive soul who loved his solitude. So while We, the public, (the Moon) saw him through the lens of his spectacular Moon in Leo next to Saturn and Pluto in Leo in the 7th house of dramatic, intense, vivid relationships ~ the flamboyant Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom lost in space, the Thin White Duke, David Bowie was thought of himself as a writer. He was a songwriter, actor in film and stage, music video director, and visual artist. His last public appearance was the opening of his new show “Lazarus” off Broadway in New York City.
His Aquarius Ascendant rising and Sagittarius Midheaven taught us, in a kind yet direct way, how to think differently. His top 100 favorite book list was floating around the internet after his death suggested a deep and wide mind ~back to that out of bound Capricorn Mercury ~ delving into topics that drew his attention while reading before that roaring fire. His Uranus in Gemini, ruler of his ascendant answers to his out of bounds Mercury, making him introduce us to the revolutionary concepts and ideas that he found during his literary travels. Indeed many articles on the internet cite his influences on the performers who followed him ~ virtually modeling how to keep re-inventing yourself and life as an artist.
His Pluto was out of bounds, so depth, darkness and addictions were part of his life story. His Neptune was the most aspected planet in his chart ~ including talking to that out of bounds Pluto ~ so the creative planet played a prominent role in his continual evolution.
His Pallas Athena ~ the pattern seeing asteroid ~ is joined to his Ascendant, both joined to the Arabic Part of Passion. His Ceres, a dwarf planet of creativity is in Aquarius in his first house~ he lived and breathed creativity. A passionate, imaginative person who partnered with complicated concepts (South Node in Sagittarius) and brought them down to earth to deliver the ideas to the rest of us in a clear and concise, simple manner (North Node in Gemini). By all accounts after he received his cancer diagnosis 18 months ago, he remained a prolific artist, working feverishly with that exalted Mars in Capricorn to continue to answer the existential questions that fueled and inspired his life.
His wife of 22 years, Iman Jones, said she wasn’t married to David Bowie ~ that was a persona he created. She was married to David Jones ~ his birth name. She knew his hidden 12th house Mars and Capricorn Sun while the rest of us pressed our noses against the Leo showmanship and applause.
God Speed to you David Jones as you travel to your new destination! Thank you David Bowie for inspiring us to live our true lives and ask the tough questions!
